Plastic And Its Applications: An Overview


Plastic molding types is basically done using two types of polymers –thermoplastics and thermos sets. Thermoplastic are mold-able and so can be reshaped. Thermos sets are not mold-able so they retain their shape. A variety of processes are used to shape plastic such as extrusion, blow molding, compression molding and thermos-forming  Plastic injection molding is done by extrusion process.

In extrusion process, raw plastic is fed from a hose into a melting chamber. The heat melts the plastic and it is then filled into a cold mold and on cooling it solidifies into the shape of the mold which is then removed. Plastic molding has application in electrical, electronic, automotive, pneumatic, hydraulic and leather industries

Injection molding can be done with many materials including glass but thermoplastic is widely used.  In thermoplastics molding process, polystyrene, nylon, polypropylene and polythene are heated and poured into molds of varied shapes. The entire process is carefully planned and executed to match the precise shape, size, weight parameters.
