Plastic molding has been used in many
automotive, electronics and hydraulic industries. It involves a variety of
processes which are applied to reshape plastics or different types of polymers
so that they can be used in different applications. Some of the processes of
molding plastic include extrusion, blow molding and compression molding.
Injection molding is mostly preferred because it can be used to manufacture
complex shapes and is generally a low cost production process with fewer
effects on the environment.
The
extrusion process is the most common plastic injection molding technique. In this case, raw plastic is exposed to heat
inside a melting chamber. The plastic melts and is later filled in a cold plastic mold. When the melted plastic
cools down, it solidifies into the same shape as that of the plastic mold. This process requires
state of the art molding equipment in order to emerge successful. The industry
also needs to invest in a variety of plastic molds in order to provide a wide
range of molded products to the market.
Different
types of polymers can be used in plastic
injection molding. The polymers are divided into two distinct groups,
thermos setting plastics and thermoplastics. Thermos setting plastics are the ones
which cannot be re-melted and reused once treated. That is, the exposure to the
chemical process is irreversible when it comes to thermos setting plastics. Good
examples of these plastics are epoxy and polyester. On the other hand,
thermoplastics are the ones commonly used in injection molding. These plastics
can be heated, melted and later reused. Good examples of thermoplastics are
nylon and polyethylene. Notably, even though glass is not a polymer, it can
still be melted and recycled.
Mold
making is another very crucial process in injection molding. Molds have to be
made using complex designs and multiple machine processes. In order to come up
with the perfect plastic mold, you need a high level of skill.
Beryllium copper and steel are the most commonly used in mold manufacturing.
However, aluminum is a cheaper alternative.
There
are a number of products in the market which have been manufactured using the plastic injection molding technique.
Plastic automotive fasteners are among some of the most common products
manufactured using this method. They are used to fasten various equipment's in
motor vehicles. They can be customized to suit different applications. The
fasteners are used in the automotive industry because they are easy to
assemble, click and mount. They also make minimal noise and are very economical
compared to other fasteners in the market.
The plastic molding technique has also been
used to manufacture backpack buckles. Some of these plastic hardware products
are used in very critical environments and they must be created using the most
suitable techniques. Backpack buckles are used in various outdoor activities by
military people.
Plastic injection molding must be performed using state of
the art equipment and machinery. Most industries which have manufactured a wide
range of plastic hardware have modern equipment used for molding plastics. All
these plastic molds would not maintain their ruggedness and longevity if the
best production methods are not put in place.
